Early Devonian landscape, artwork C016 / 5348

Early Devonian landscape. Artwork of early vascular plants (Rhynia) and larger fungal or lichen-like organisms (Prototaxites) growing on land during the Early Devonian period (420 to 395 million years ago). The Sun is low in the sky above a mountain range. The Rhynia plants are small, as most vascular plants of this era were less than about 60 centimetres high. In contrast, the Prototaxites trunks rise to a height of 8 metres. Large terrestrial animals had not yet appeared, and these plants were among the first to evolve. For this scene without Prototaxites, see C016/5347

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an Early Devonian landscape, taking us back in time to a period between 420 and 395 million years ago. The artwork depicts the emergence of early vascular plants known as Rhynia, along with larger fungal or lichen-like organisms called Prototaxites, thriving on land. As the Sun hangs low in the sky above a majestic mountain range, it casts a warm glow over this ancient scene. The Rhynia plants stand small and delicate, typical of most vascular plants during this era that reached heights of only about 60 centimeters. In stark contrast, the towering trunks of Prototaxites reach an impressive height of 8 meters. This image transports us to a time when large terrestrial animals had not yet appeared on Earth's stage. These pioneering plants were among the first to evolve and adapt to life on land during this transformative period in Earth's history. The absence of these colossal Prototaxites can be observed in another version of this scene (C016/5347). Immerse yourself in nature's historical tapestry through this breathtaking illustration capturing marshy landscapes teeming with biological wonders like fungi and lichens. Let your imagination wander as you explore prehistoric swamps and waterways under vast skies adorned with fluffy clouds. This artwork serves as a testament to our planet's rich paleontological heritage and reminds us how far life has come since its humble beginnings.
