The Sun is low in the sky above a mountain range. The Rhynia plants are small, as most vascular plants of this era were less than about 60 centimetres high. In contrast, the Prototaxites trunks rise to a height of 8 metres. Large terrestrial animals had not yet appeared, and these plants were among the first to evolve.
