Haemagglutinin viral surface protein F007 / 9932

Haemagglutinin viral surface protein. Molecular model of haemagglutinin, a surface protein from the influenza virus, complexed with a neutralising antibody. Haemagglutinin is found on the surface of many bacteria and viruses, notably the influenza virus. Its function is to bind to the surface of its target cell and allow the viral genes into the cell, where replication occurs. The protein is composed of three identical sub-units, which have a bulbous head borne on a long stalk. The colours of this molecule show the sub-units, and the head region of each sub-unit has been coloured differently to the stalk. There are 16 different types of haemagglutinin known, numbered 1-16. H1, H2 and H3 are found in human flu viruses, the rest mainly affect birds, although the H5N1 strain of flu has killed dozens of humans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate molecular structure of Haemagglutinin viral surface protein F007 / 9932, a key component of the influenza virus. The image depicts a detailed model of haemagglutinin complexed with a neutralising antibody, highlighting its vital role in infection and disease. Haemagglutinin is a glycoprotein found on the surface of various bacteria and viruses, including influenza. Its primary function is to bind to target cells and facilitate the entry of viral genes for replication. Composed of three identical sub-units, this protein features a bulbous head atop a long stalk. Each sub-unit's head region has been color-coded differently from the stalk for clarity. With 16 known types, haemagglutinin plays an essential role in both human flu viruses (H1, H2, H3) and avian strains like H5N1 that have caused significant harm to humans. This stunning visual representation sheds light on its structural complexity and importance in understanding viral infections. The artwork serves as an invaluable tool for researchers studying virology, microbiology, biochemistry, and medicine alike. By unraveling haemagglutinin's tertiary structure at such detail, scientists can develop compounds or inhibitors that target this crucial protein as potential treatments or preventive measures against influenza. Overall, this mesmerizing illustration captures the beauty within biological structures while emphasizing their significance in healthcare research and our ongoing battle against infectious diseases like flu.
