HED meteorites, light micrograph C013 / 7774
HED meteorites. Polarised light micrograph of thin sections of two HED (howardite, eucrite and diogenite) meteorites recovered from Antarctica, showing the crystalline structure. HED meteorites are a large group of meteorites believed to originate from the Vesta asteroid. QUE 97053 (left) and EET 90020 (right) are eucrites, crystallised lavas with the composition of basalt, the most common lava type on Earth. QUE97053 consists mostly of elongated gray crystals of feldspar (calcium aluminium silicate) and brightly coloured grains of pyroxene (magnesium iron silicate), the texture of which is consistent with crystallisation of molten magma. EET90020 has similar mineralogy but a recrystallised texture of equant grains formed by later heating. Eucrites like

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of HED meteorites, providing a glimpse into the mesmerizing world of celestial geology. The image, taken using polarised light micrography, unveils thin sections of two HED meteorites recovered from Antarctica. These meteorites are believed to have originated from the Vesta asteroid. On the left side of the print is QUE 97053, an eucrite that predominantly consists of elongated gray crystals of feldspar and brightly colored grains of pyroxene. The texture observed here suggests crystallisation from molten magma. In contrast, EET 90020 on the right exhibits similar mineralogy but displays a recrystallised texture with equant grains formed by subsequent heating. The black background intensifies the visual impact as it accentuates every detail within this still life composition. Each cutout section reveals a solidified lava specimen that tells a story millions or even billions of years in the making. As we delve deeper into planetary science and volcanology through such remarkable discoveries, these crystal formations offer invaluable insights into our understanding of Earth's geological processes and shed light on extraterrestrial phenomena. This extraordinary photograph serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit to unravel mysteries beyond our planet's boundaries. Captured by NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, this image stands as a testament to their commitment in bringing us closer to unlocking secrets hidden within our vast universe while showcasing nature's artistic prowess at its finest.
