Nikola Tesla, Serb-US physicist
Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer. Tesla was educated at Graz and Prague, but in 1884 he emigrated to the USA. For a while he worked with Edison, but soon left to work on his own. He developed the alternating current (a.c.) induction motor, and helped advance a.c. power generation and transmission. He also worked on high-frequency a.c. currents, inventing the Tesla Coil, a transformer in which the primary and secondary coils are in resonance. He used it to create electric sparks 40 metres long, and in 1899 lit 200 electric lamps over 25 miles without wires. The SI unit of magnetic flux density is named for him. Engraving from Discoveries and Inventions of the Nineteenth Century (1898)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases the brilliant mind of Nikola Tesla, a renowned physicist and electrical engineer. Born in 1856 in what is now Croatia, Tesla later became a naturalized American citizen. Educated at prestigious institutions in Graz and Prague, he eventually ventured to the United States in 1884. Initially collaborating with Thomas Edison, Tesla soon embarked on his own path of innovation. His groundbreaking work led to the development of alternating current (a. c. ) induction motor, revolutionizing power generation and transmission systems. Notably, he delved into high-frequency a. c. currents and invented the remarkable Tesla Coil - an ingenious transformer that resonates primary and secondary coils. Tesla's extraordinary experiments with this coil resulted in electric sparks spanning an astonishing 40 meters! In one astounding demonstration in 1899, he illuminated over 200 electric lamps across a distance of 25 miles without any physical wires. His contributions were so significant that even today we honor him by naming the SI unit for magnetic flux density after him – tesla (T). This historical illustration from "Discoveries and Inventions of the Nineteenth Century" captures both his scientific prowess as well as his impact on modern engineering. Nikola Tesla's legacy endures as an emblematic figure who harnessed electricity's potential like no other during the late nineteenth century.
