Weymouth Harbour, August 1929

A GWR publicity imaging showing a view across Weymouth Harbour to the Pavilion. The Pavilion opened in 1908 but was rebuilt in the late 1950s after a fire. Just in front of the pavilion, in this view, was the Weymouth Quay railway station. It served the many boats coming in and out of the harbour

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR takes us back to Weymouth Harbour in August 1929. The image showcases a picturesque view across the bustling harbor, with its glistening waters reflecting the warm summer sun. Standing proudly on the horizon is the iconic Pavilion, an architectural gem that first opened its doors in 1908. However, this particular photograph captures a moment before tragedy struck. Just in front of the Pavilion stands Weymouth Quay railway station, serving as a vital link for boats navigating in and out of the harbor. This transportation hub facilitated seamless connections between land and sea, ensuring smooth trade and travel. The scene exudes an air of tranquility as various boats and ships gracefully glide through the calm waters. Perhaps fishermen are returning with their day's catch or families are embarking on leisurely cruises along the coast. The sight evokes nostalgia for simpler times when maritime activities were at their peak. As we delve into this snapshot frozen in time, we can't help but appreciate how much has changed since then. While fire ravaged and rebuilt parts of Weymouth Pavilion during late 1950s, it remains an enduring symbol of resilience against adversity—a testament to human determination to preserve history even amidst challenges. This print transports us back to a bygone era where life revolved around this vibrant coastal town—where sea met land at Weymouth Harbour—and invites us to reflect upon our own connection with history and heritage.
