This particular engine, No. 7903, was named after Foremarke Hall, the country residence of the Duke of Devonshire. The Modified Hall Class engines were notable for their improved performance and efficiency, with larger boilers and modified valve gear. They were primarily used on express passenger and freight services, and their distinctive appearance, with large chimneys and domeless boilers, made them a familiar sight on the rails.
