EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases Modified Hall Class 4-6-0 No. 7903, Foremarke Hall, as it gracefully comes to a halt at Bath Spa Station during the 1960s. The Modified Hall Class locomotives, numbering 112 in total, were a development of the earlier Hall Class engines, which were introduced by the Great Western Railway (GWR) in the 1920s. This particular engine, No. 7903, was named after Foremarke Hall, the country residence of the Duke of Devonshire. The Modified Hall Class engines were notable for their improved performance and efficiency, with larger boilers and modified valve gear. They were primarily used on express passenger and freight services, and their distinctive appearance, with large chimneys and domeless boilers, made them a familiar sight on the rails. The photograph captures the engine in its element, with steam billowing from the chimney and the station platform in the background. The scene is reminiscent of a bygone era, with the simple elegance of the steam engine contrasting with the modern buildings and infrastructure. The photograph also provides a glimpse into the daily life of railway operations during the 1960s, a time when steam power was gradually being replaced by diesel and electric locomotives. The Modified Hall Class engines were retired from service in the late 1960s, and only a few survivors remain preserved in various museums and collections around the UK. This photograph is a precious reminder of the engineering marvels of the past and the rich history of the railway industry.
