EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print showcases Ichikawa Danjuro V in the role of Oboshi Yuranosuke from the renowned Kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," performed at the Nakamura Theater in the fifth month of 1783 in Japan. The print, created by the master artist Shunsho, transports us back to the Edo period with its intricate details and vibrant colors. Oboshi Yuranosuke, a loyal retainer of the wronged samurai Asano Naganori, is depicted here standing before a door, deep in thought. His somber black attire, adorned with gold and silver accents, signifies his mourning for his lord's unjust death. The intricate patterns on his clothing, reminiscent of the Hosoban artistic school, reflect the meticulous attention to detail characteristic of the Katsukawa School. The print's rich green background adds a serene contrast to the intense emotion conveyed by Danjuro V's expressive face and posture. The handheld fan, a common accessory for Kabuki actors, adds an element of elegance and sophistication to the scene. This stunning work of art not only provides a glimpse into the world of Edo period drama but also showcases the exquisite fashion and artistic traditions of 18th century Japan.
