The abbey was the setting for man's first flight attempt in the form of a monk named Elmer who threw himself from the abbey tower and subsequently broke both his legs in c. 1000. TEWKESBURY ABBEY, Gloucestershire. View from the south west. Construction of the Benedictine Monastery began in 1107. The church contains the remains of Edward, Prince of Wales (son of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou) who died at the Battle of Tewkesbury on 4th May 1471. Photographed by Laurence Goldman in May 1965
