Burford Church a62_07218
ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, CHURCH LANE, BURFORD, WEST OXFORDSHIRE. Exterior view of the south porch of St John the Baptists Church.
View of the south porch with a tracery-panneled facade and three statuettes in niches at the lower left and right corners, and in a central position at the top of the facade. Above the facade are three crenellated pinnacles, and at the base is a pointed arch as an entrance. To the right of the porch is a window in a gable, with a trefoil niche above it. Behind the window is the central tower, with the clock face and the window above it visible. The spire, however, it cropped out. In the foreground are a few headstones. The church dates back to the 12th century, but it is possible that it has earlier origins. The church was restored in the 1870s by Street, which prompted William Morris to found the SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings). Historic England is the public body that champions and protects England's historic places. © Historic England Archive

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite exterior view of Burford Church, also known as St John the Baptist Church, located in Church Lane, Burford, West Oxfordshire. The focal point of this image is the stunning south porch with its intricately designed tracery-panneled facade. Adorning this facade are three statuettes elegantly placed within niches at both lower corners and a central position at the top. Above the facade stand three crenellated pinnacles, adding to the architectural beauty of this medieval parish church. The entrance to the church is through a pointed arch beneath the porch. Adjacent to it on the right side is a window set within a gable, accompanied by a trefoil niche above it. Behind this window lies the central tower with its visible clock face and another window just above it (although unfortunately cropped out in this particular photograph). The foreground features several headstones that add an air of serenity and history to this ancient place of worship. Dating back to at least the 12th century, Burford Church has stood as an important religious site for centuries and underwent restoration in the 1870s by Street architects. This remarkable image captures not only architectural details but also highlights how significant historical structures like these have inspired movements such as William Morris' founding of SPAB (Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings). It serves as a testament to our commitment towards preserving our rich cultural heritage for future generations.
