Hangar walls JLP01_08_086451

HEATHROW AIRPORT, B E A SERVICING HANGAR, HEATHROW, HILLINGDON, GREATER LONDON. The west wall of the BEA aircraft servicing hangar at Heathrow Airport during its construction, with men fixing supporting braces to girders in the centre of the wall.
In October 1969 Laing announced that its Industrial Engineering Branch had been awarded a contract for construction of an aircraft servicing hangar for British European Airways at Heathrow Airport. It was the companys second major contract at Heathrow, following the completion of the BEA and BOAC cargo terminal. The hangar was designed to accommodate new airbus jets and existing aircraft. The hangar roof was constructed on the ground and was raised 20.5m by hydraulic jacks over 8 days in November 1970. It was then supported by octagonal columns, the bases of which had been sunk into 75ft shafts. Once the roof had been raised, concreting of the floor slab and construction of the walls could begin. Braithwaite manufactured the steelwork for the roof and the columns

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the construction of the BEA aircraft servicing hangar at Heathrow Airport in Greater London. The image showcases a group of men diligently fixing supporting braces to girders on the west wall of the hangar. In October 1969, Laing's Industrial Engineering Branch proudly announced that they had been awarded a contract for this significant project. Serving as their second major undertaking at Heathrow, following the completion of the BEA and BOAC cargo terminal, this hangar was specifically designed to accommodate both new airbus jets and existing aircraft. The remarkable feat of engineering involved constructing the hangar roof on the ground before raising it an impressive 20.5 meters using hydraulic jacks over eight days in November 1970. To ensure stability, octagonal columns were employed, with their bases sunk into deep shafts reaching 75 feet below ground level. Once the roof was successfully raised, attention turned towards concreting the floor slab and erecting walls around it. Braithwaite played a crucial role in manufacturing both steelwork components for this awe-inspiring structure. This print from Historic England Archive not only provides a glimpse into an important moment during construction but also serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination in creating essential infrastructure for aviation operations at one of Britain's busiest airports.
