CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL, FULHAM ROAD, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. Looking up through the illuminated atrium at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, showing the lighting on the underside of the elevated walkways.
Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years, and the hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of the atrium lights at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. Looking up through the illuminated atrium, we are treated to a stunning display of lighting on the underside of elevated walkways. The abstract and futuristic atmosphere created by these lights adds an intriguing touch to the hospital's interior. Constructed between 1989 and 1993 by Laing Management Contracting on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority, this new teaching hospital replaced the old St Stephens Hospital that was demolished earlier in 1989. Utilizing fast track construction techniques, this ambitious project was completed in less than five years. The result is a modern marvel that showcases both architectural brilliance and functional design. This photograph transports us back to the 1990s when this state-of-the-art facility first opened its doors. It serves as a reminder of how far medical advancements have come over time. As we gaze upon this image, we can't help but appreciate not only its aesthetic appeal but also its historical significance. The official opening ceremony conducted by Queen Elizabeth II on May 13th, 1993 marked an important milestone for healthcare in London. Thanks to A© Historic England Archive for preserving this remarkable moment in history through their lens.
