EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, located on Fulham Road in Kensington and Chelsea, Greater London. The image showcases the final piece of steel for the hospital's structural frame being carefully lifted into position by a towering crane. During the years 1989 to 1993, Laing Management Contracting undertook the construction project on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority. Thanks to innovative fast track construction techniques, this impressive teaching hospital was completed within an astonishingly short span of less than five years. The significance of this milestone is further emphasized by its official opening ceremony on May 13th, 1993, graced by none other than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II herself. This historic event marked a new era for healthcare provision in London. Through this remarkable photograph from A© Historic England Archive, we are transported back to witness both the grandeur and precision involved in constructing such an essential medical facility. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and collaborative efforts that brought about this architectural marvel which continues to serve countless patients today.
