CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL, FULHAM ROAD, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. Kenneth Clarke, Secretary of State for Health, posed beside the foundation stone for Chelsea and Westminster Hospital with senior staff involved in the project
Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years. The hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993. The use of innovative fast track construction techniques allowed for the completion of the entire project in less than five years. The importance of this occasion is further highlighted by its official opening on May 13th, 1993, graced by none other than Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II herself. This historic event marked a milestone not only for healthcare but also for Kensington and Chelsea as a whole.
