Operating theatre handover JLP01_09_823228

MAYDAY HOSPITAL, LONDON ROAD, WEST THORNTON, CROYDON, GREATER LONDON. G Putley, project manager, and I Simple posed in an operating theatre at Mayday Hospital, on the handover day for Phase I of the redevelopment.
Laings Southern Region was awarded the contract for the first phase of a multi-million pound redevelopment project at Mayday Hospital. The Laing Phase I contract was awarded by the South West Thames Regional Health Authority and was to be carried out over a period of three years, with work starting in 1979. The contract included a new three storey surgical block with a linked service block, which was to be connected to the main hospital complex by bridge. The Laing contract also included the provision of a new road between the site and London Road, car parks, and other ancillary buildings. The new surgical block had twelve wards providing approximately 330 beds, operating theatres, an intensive therapy unit, an adult day care unit, and other staff facilities. The services block housed a kitchen, staff dining room, goods reception and distribution centre, and further plant areas

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the moment of handover in an operating theatre at Mayday Hospital, London Road, West Thornton, Croydon. G Putley, the project manager, and I Simple stand proudly as representatives of a significant milestone - Phase I of the hospital's redevelopment. Mayday Hospital entrusted Laings Southern Region with this multi-million pound project after it was awarded the contract by the South West Thames Regional Health Authority. The three-year endeavor began in 1979 and aimed to transform Mayday Hospital into a state-of-the-art medical facility. The focal point of Phase I was a new three-story surgical block connected to the main complex by a bridge. This impressive structure housed twelve wards accommodating approximately 330 beds along with cutting-edge operating theatres, an intensive therapy unit, adult day care facilities, and various staff amenities. In addition to these advancements in healthcare infrastructure, Laing's contract also included ancillary buildings such as car parks and other essential services like a kitchen and goods reception center. As we stand here today in this meticulously designed operating theatre on handover day for Phase I completion, we celebrate not only our collective achievement but also our commitment to providing exceptional healthcare services for the community. This photograph serves as a testament to our dedication towards creating modern medical environments that prioritize patient well-being while supporting medical professionals in delivering top-quality care.
