EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a hydrotherapy pool located in the new rehabilitation centre at Mayday Hospital, London Road, West Thornton, Croydon. The image showcases the state-of-the-art facilities that were part of a £1.2 million contract awarded to Laings Southern Region in 1984 for further development at Mayday Hospital. During this phase of redevelopment, which followed the construction of a new surgical block and services block (Phase I), attention was given to upgrading geriatric facilities. This included the establishment of a rehabilitation unit, wards, and most notably, a hydrotherapy pool. The hydrotherapy pool served as an oasis within the hospital premises - offering patients an opportunity to heal and recover through water-based therapy. As one can imagine from this image alone, it provided a serene environment where individuals could find solace amidst their healthcare journey. This photograph is not just about capturing architectural beauty; it symbolizes progress in healthcare during the 1980s. It represents how hospitals like Mayday embraced innovative approaches to patient care by incorporating specialized amenities such as hydrotherapy pools into their infrastructure.
