MAYDAY HOSPITAL, LONDON ROAD, WEST THORNTON, CROYDON, GREATER LONDON. A view towards the new services block and surgical block at Mayday Hospital, taken from the north-west.
Laings Southern Region was awarded the contract for the first phase of a multi-million pound redevelopment project at Mayday Hospital. The Laing Phase I contract was awarded by the South West Thames Regional Health Authority and was to be carried out over a period of three years, with work starting in 1979. The contract included a new three storey surgical block with a linked service block, which was to be connected to the main hospital complex by bridge. The Laing contract also included the provision of a new road between the site and London Road, car parks, and other ancillary buildings. The new surgical block had twelve wards providing approximately 330 beds, operating theatres, an intensive therapy unit, an adult day care unit, and other staff facilities. The services block housed a kitchen, staff dining room, goods reception and distribution centre, and further plant areas

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Mayday Hospital in West Thornton, Croydon, Greater London. The image captures a view towards the new services block and surgical block of the hospital from the north-west perspective. In 1979, Laings Southern Region was awarded the prestigious contract for Phase I of a remarkable multi-million pound redevelopment project at Mayday Hospital. This three-year project, commissioned by the South West Thames Regional Health Authority, aimed to transform and modernize the hospital facilities. The Laing Phase I contract encompassed several significant additions to Mayday Hospital's infrastructure. It included a state-of-the-art three-storey surgical block connected to a service block via an impressive bridge that linked it to the main hospital complex. Additionally, Laing undertook constructing a new road between London Road and the site along with car parks and other ancillary buildings. The highlight of this redevelopment was undoubtedly the new surgical block which boasted twelve wards providing approximately 330 beds. Equipped with cutting-edge operating theatres, an intensive therapy unit, adult day care unit, and various staff facilities - this facility marked a significant advancement in healthcare provision. Adjacent to it stood the services block housing essential amenities such as kitchen facilities for staff members' dining needs, goods reception and distribution center ensuring seamless operations within the hospital premises. This extraordinary photograph taken by A© Historic England Archive offers us a glimpse into one phase of this transformative journey undertaken by Mayday Hospital towards delivering exceptional healthcare services to its community.
