EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic unveiling ceremony of a bronze sculpture at Paternoster Square in the City of London. Renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin takes center stage as he reveals Elisabeth Frink's magnificent artwork depicting a shepherd and his sheep. The sculpture, commissioned by Paternoster Development to commemorate European Architectural Heritage Year, stands proudly amidst the bustling office blocks, shopping precinct, piazza, and three-level car park that make up the iconic Paternoster development. The photograph transports us back to July 1975 when this momentous event took place. Alongside Menuhin are Sir Kirby Laing and Geoffrey Anderson, both influential figures within the Development company. This public art installation not only adds aesthetic value but also serves as a testament to the collaboration between John Laing Construction Limited, Trollope and Colls Limited, and George Wimpey and Company Limited during its construction in the 1960s. Elisabeth Frink's sculpture beautifully captures the essence of pastoral life with its depiction of a shepherd tending to his flock. As Menuhin unveils this masterpiece before an eager audience, we witness history being made in one of London's most vibrant locations. Preserved by Historic England Archive for future generations to admire, this print encapsulates an important moment where art meets architecture in perfect harmony.
