PATERNOSTER SQUARE, CITY OF LONDON. A group of guests watching the topping out ceremony for a 10-storey block at the Paternoster development on closed circuit television.
Work on the Paternoster development was carried out in a joint venture by John Laing Construction Limited, Trollope and Colls Limited, and George Wimpey and Company Limited. The development consisted of a series of office blocks, a shopping precinct, an extensive piazza and a three-level car park. On Tuesday 28th May, a 10-storey block was topped out at the Paternoster development. A copper cylinder containing copies of The Times, Financial Times, Team Spirit, and a list of signatures of those working on the site was lifted to the roof by N C Macnamara. There it was embedded in the final pour of concrete. The guests were unable to watch the final pour of concrete at roof level due to heavy rain, and instead they stood inside the building and watched the proceedings on closed circuit television. On the same day as the topping out ceremony, another 10-storey block, Courtenay House, was officially handed over to the Central Electricity Generating Board

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the development of Paternoster Square, City of London. A group of esteemed guests can be seen gathered together, their eyes fixed on a closed circuit television screen displaying the topping out ceremony for a 10-storey block at the Paternoster development. The construction work on this remarkable project was undertaken by John Laing Construction Limited, Trollope and Colls Limited, and George Wimpey and Company Limited in a joint venture. The ambitious development encompassed several office blocks, a bustling shopping precinct, an expansive piazza, and a multi-level car park. On Tuesday 28th May, amidst heavy rainfall that prevented outdoor observation, one of the 10-storey blocks reached its pinnacle as it was topped out. N C Macnamara carefully lifted a copper cylinder containing copies of prominent publications like The Times and Financial Times along with signatures from those involved in the project to embed it within the final layer of concrete poured onto the roof. While unable to witness this symbolic act firsthand due to adverse weather conditions outside, these distinguished guests found themselves huddled inside another building watching every detail unfold through closed circuit television screens. This unique perspective allowed them to remain connected to this milestone event despite nature's interference. Coinciding with this memorable topping out ceremony was another noteworthy occasion - Courtenay House being officially handed over to the Central Electricity Generating Board (not mentioned for commercial use). This photograph serves as both an intriguing glimpse into history and testament to human ingenuity shaping our urban landscapes.
