Unity House, Euston Road, Camden, Greater London. A Ruston Bucyrus 400SC driving expanded pile foundations during the construction of Unity House.
The contract for the new £ 4.5 million headquarters for the National Union of Railwaymen at Euston Road was awarded to Laings London Region. The new headquarters were built on the site of the former Unity House, which had been the home of the National Union of Railwaymen since 1910. Some features of the old building were incorporated into its modern counterpart, including the boardrooms leaded cupola skylight and panelling. The six-storey building was designed around a courtyard and was located between the Wellcome Foundation Building and the Babcock Building, in the area between Euston Road and Gower Place

1980s Construction Machinery Office

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Unity House, located on Euston Road in Camden, Greater London. The image showcases a Ruston Bucyrus 400SC machine diligently driving expanded pile foundations for the new £4.5 million headquarters of the National Union of Railwaymen. Laings London Region was awarded the prestigious contract to build this six-storey office building, which would replace the former Unity House that had served as the union's home since 1910. In an effort to preserve some elements of its predecessor, certain features such as the leaded cupola skylight and panelling from the old building were incorporated into this modern counterpart. Situated between the Wellcome Foundation Building and Babcock Building, Unity House was thoughtfully designed around a courtyard concept. Its strategic location between Euston Road and Gower Place further added to its prominence within this bustling area. The photograph not only highlights impressive machinery at work but also provides a glimpse into an important chapter in London's architectural history during the 1980s. Preserved by © Historic England Archive, this image serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and progress while honoring past traditions.
