Concrete coating JLP01_10_16935
Fishbourne, Chichester, West Sussex. A worker carrying out guniting (spraying concrete) on the Southern gas pipeline.
This gas pipeline was installed by the Southern region of O C Summers Ltd, part of the Laing group of companies, who specialised in laying and maintaining underground pipes. The concrete coated section of pipe shown in the photograph was probably about to be pulled across the Fishbourne Estuary, as recorded in the Laing monthly newsletter Team Spirit, published in October 1984

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant moment in the construction of the Southern gas pipeline in Fishbourne, Chichester, West Sussex. The image captures a dedicated worker engaged in guniting, which involves spraying concrete onto the surface of the pipe. The Southern gas pipeline was expertly installed by O C Summers Ltd, a prominent member of the Laing group of companies renowned for their expertise in underground pipes. This particular section of pipe, coated with concrete as seen in the photograph, was likely destined to be pulled across the picturesque Fishbourne Estuary. The historical significance of this snapshot is further highlighted by its mention in Team Spirit, Laing's monthly newsletter published back in October 1984. It serves as a testament to both the meticulous craftsmanship and collaborative efforts involved in such large-scale infrastructure projects. Through this image, we are transported back to an era where manual labor played an integral role in shaping our modern world. The dedication and hard work depicted here remind us of how essential these workers were (and still are) to progress and development. Preserved within Historic England Archive's vast collection, this print not only offers a glimpse into our industrial past but also invites contemplation on human ingenuity and perseverance amidst challenging circumstances.
