London Bridge City JLP01_10_21810

London Bridge City, Southwark, Greater London. Looking east along the south bank of the River Thames towards Tower Bridge, showing the London Bridge City complex on the right with barges in the foreground.
Various buildings within this complex of offices, flats and shops on Tooley Street in London Bridge City were built by Laing Management Contracting for the St Martins Group who redeveloped the former Hays Wharf site on the south bank of the River Thames. The redevelopment of the site took place over 2 1/2 years between 1985-1988 and included No.1 London Bridge, Cottons, Hays Galleria and 29-33 Tooley Street. At the time, it was the biggest building contract in London and was one of the largest construction projects in the country

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic London Bridge City complex in all its grandeur. Looking east along the south bank of the River Thames towards Tower Bridge, the image showcases a stunning waterscape framed by a brooding sky and dark clouds. In the foreground, barges peacefully float on the river, adding to the serene atmosphere. The buildings within this remarkable complex were meticulously constructed by Laing Management Contracting for the St Martins Group. The redevelopment of this former Hays Wharf site took place between 1985-1988 and included notable structures such as No. 1 London Bridge, Cottons, Hays Galleria, and 29-33 Tooley Street. This ambitious project was not only one of London's largest building contracts at that time but also ranked among one of the country's most significant construction endeavors. The print beautifully encapsulates an era when office spaces, flats, and shops harmoniously coexisted within this bustling riverside development. Its historical significance is undeniable as it stands as a testament to architectural excellence and urban transformation during the 1980s. With its rich history and striking composition, this print serves as a visual reminder of London's ever-evolving landscape while capturing both its industrial past and vibrant present-day ambiance. A true masterpiece preserved in time courtesy of Historic England Archive.
