7485274 Free Stone Quarries. View near Bath, Somersetshire, 1798 (hand coloured aquatint on paper) by Hassell, John (1767-1825); 27x35 cm; Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, Telford, Shropshire, UK; (add.info.: Artist: John Hassell (c1767-1825)
Published March 31, 1798 by Francis Jukes (1745-1812) Howland Street London. An excellent free stone readily carved, was to be found in abundance around Bath. Easily quarried by open cast methods, it was ripe for exploitation and when, in 1730, Ralph Allen moved into Hampton Manor House, he became interested in the stone works at Hampton Down. There he effected considerable improvements and expansion at the Combe Down quarries followed shortly after. A railway was laid down to the Avon and housing built for the work force. This aquatint shows the quarry with the town of Bath in the background, benefiting from the cheap and very workable stone.); © Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust
