This stunning illuminated manuscript page, known as the "Departure of the Templars" from the Chronique d'Outremer, dates back to around 1280 and is a testament to the artistic and historical significance of the Crusades during the Middle Ages. Created in France during the Gothic period, the page is a masterpiece of manuscript illumination, with intricate gouache on parchment decorating every inch of the page. At the center of the image, we see a group of knights, including members of both the Order of the Temple and the Order of Hospitallers, preparing for departure on a crusade. The Templars, identified by their distinctive red crosses, are led by their Grand Master, who is depicted on horseback, while the Hospitallers, wearing white mantles and red crosses, follow on foot. Surrounding the central scene, the page is filled with detailed illustrations of various aspects of crusader life. Scenes of battle and siege warfare are depicted alongside peaceful moments of rest and prayer. The page also includes an illustration of Longinus, the Roman soldier who is said to have pierced the side of Christ during the crucifixion, and who is believed to have founded the Order of the Temple.
