EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite image of a Purple Iris (Iris germanica) dates back to the late 16th or early 17th century, created by the renowned Flemish botanist and artist Anselmus de Boodt (1550-1632) and his assistant Elias Verhulst. Commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612) of the Holy Roman Empire, this masterpiece is a testament to the rich cultural and scientific heritage of the Low Countries during the Netherlands Golden Age. The Purple Iris, a member of the Iridaceae family, is depicted in stunning detail, showcasing its vibrant hue and elegant form. Anselmus de Boodt, a pioneer in the field of botanical illustration, employed various techniques such as brush, chalk, ink, and possibly even deck paint to bring the flower to life on paper. The artist's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate veining of the leaves and the delicate petals that fan out from the center. The scene is further enhanced by the use of lettering, which provides the botanical name of the plant and the name of the artist. The text is written in Latin, reflecting the scholarly nature of the work. The background is left blank, allowing the iris to take center stage. This beautiful illustration is an invaluable addition to any botanical, natural history, or art collection. It serves as a reminder of the significant role the Low Countries played in the development of botanical science during the late Renaissance period. Today, it can be found in the permanent collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, a testament to its historical and artistic significance.
