EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a young Willem Frederik (1772-1843), who would later become known as Prince Orange-Nassau and King William I. As the eldest son of William V and Wilhelmina of Prussia, his regal lineage is evident even in his childhood portrait. The bust captures him in profile, facing left, exuding an air of grace and nobility. Interestingly, this miniature was previously identified as Willem George Frederik, another member of the Orange-Nassau family. However, further research has revealed its true subject to be the future king himself. This discovery adds historical significance to this remarkable piece. Part of a collection dedicated to portrait miniatures, this artwork provides a glimpse into the life and legacy of Willem I Frederik - one that would shape the history of the Netherlands. Crafted by Pieter Lesage or someone attributed to him between 1774 and 1780, it is made from ivory with delicate metal accents and protected by glass.
