EDITORS COMMENTS
Frederick III, the Wiseman King of Denmark and Norway (1609-1670), is depicted in this evocative cutout portrait. Born on October 5, 1609, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Frederick ascended to the throne in 1648 following the death of his father, Christian IV. His reign, which lasted until 1670, was marked by significant political and military achievements. Frederick III was a man of great intellect and culture, known for his love of learning and the arts. He was an accomplished musician and a patron of the sciences, founding the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in 1648. Frederick's court was a center of European culture, attracting scholars, artists, and musicians from all over Europe. Despite his intellectual pursuits, Frederick was also a skilled military leader. He led his armies in several successful campaigns against Sweden, expanding Danish territories and securing Denmark's position as a major European power. Frederick's military victories earned him the nickname "the Great" and solidified his legacy as one of Denmark's greatest monarchs. Frederick III was also known for his religious tolerance, allowing freedom of worship for Protestants and Catholics alike. This policy helped to maintain peace and stability within his kingdom during a time of religious conflict in Europe. Tragically, Frederick's reign was cut short by his death on February 9, 1670, at the age of 60. He was succeeded by his son, Christian V, who continued many of his father's policies and achievements. This cutout portrait captures the essence of Frederick III, a wise and enlightened monarch who left an indelible mark on Danish history.
