Sir Charles Lyell, Bart. (1797-1875), a distinguished Scottish lawyer, geologist, and popularizer of the scientific theory of uniformitarianism, is depicted in this mid-19th century photograph by Maull & Polyblank, Photographers. Born on November 14, 1797, Lyell was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1830, an honor he held for the remainder of his life.
