EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in this vintage print from 1912-1913, we witness the bustling world of Thomas Hendra Stapleton's beehives at Gwinear, Cornwall. A true master of his craft, Thomas was not only a professional beekeeper but also a loving father to his brood of twelve or thirteen children. As shared by his great nephew in 1984, these unique hives were kept stationary throughout the year and were meticulously handcrafted by Thomas himself. The dedication and passion he poured into his work is evident in every detail of this picturesque scene. In the foreground, we see five of Thomas' children standing proudly beside their father's labor of love. From left to right, they are Olive, Evita, Florence, Thomas Junior - following in his father's footsteps - and little Gordon nestled comfortably in a pram. Their youthful curiosity shines through as they marvel at the wonders buzzing within those wooden structures. The photographer behind this remarkable snapshot is Samuel John Govier who expertly captures the essence of rural life intertwined with nature's sweetest gift: honeybees. This photograph serves as a testament to Cornwall's rich heritage and its deep connection with both agriculture and family values
