EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to October 1883, capturing a moment in the history of Cunnacks Tannery in Helston, Cornwall. The senior partner of this renowned firm of tanners and curriers, George James Cunnack, proudly dons his top hat at the center of the image. His distinguished presence is complemented by Francis Henry Cunnack standing on the far left, while workman William Jennings completes the scene on the far right. The photograph offers a glimpse into the daily operations of this thriving business. Men can be seen diligently working amidst stacks of tools and piles of skins. Buckets are scattered around as essential equipment for their craft. Each individual's attire reflects their dedication to their trade - from hats perched atop heads to well-groomed beards that speak volumes about their expertise. Edward Cunnack graciously supplied this valuable data on December 17th, 1979, allowing us to piece together some details surrounding this historical moment frozen in time. While it is known that Meneage Street housed the tannery's premises, it is believed that additional locations were established in Lady Street and St Johns by 1906. The identity of the photographer remains unknown; however, we owe them our gratitude for capturing this snapshot from over a century ago. This evocative image serves as a testament to both Cornwall's industrial heritage and those who dedicated themselves to preserving its traditions at Cunnacks Tannery.
