First, the Purple Land Crab (Gecarcinus ruricola) graces the left side of the illustration with its vibrant purple coloration and robust, land-dwelling form. The Hermit Crab (Paguristes eremita) is depicted in the middle, identified by its distinctive conical shell and retracted claws, which it uses to carry its home with it. Next to the hermit crab is the Sea Hermit Crab (Pagurus bernhardus), which differs from its land-dwelling cousin by its flattened, fan-like pincers and a more elongated body.
