Originally formed in 1839 as the 2nd Bombay (European) Regiment, it underwent a transformation into a light infantry unit five years later, leading to its name change. After serving valiantly during the Indian Mutiny from 1857 to 1859, it was transferred under British government control and given the prestigious position as the 106th Foot in the order of precedence.
