EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in American history during the late 1861 at Fort Richardson near Arlington, Virginia. The image showcases Union artillerymen from the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment manning massive 24-pounder guns. These brave soldiers stand proudly beside their powerful weapons, mounted alternately on garrison carriages and front-pintle barbette carriages. Interestingly, these men were still officially listed as part of the 4th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment at this time. It wasn't until January 2,1862 that they would be re-constituted as the esteemed 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery. In this photo, we can spot Colonel Robert O. Tyler, their regimental commander, cradling his sword on his forearm towards the left-hand side. The misty overcast day adds an aura of mystery to this scene while also making it challenging to discern details such as the faintly visible American flag flying in the distance. This historic photograph is part of Mathew Brady's renowned "Incidents of War" series of albumen prints and has been preserved by Battlefields in Motion Ltd. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded of the courage and dedication displayed by these artillerymen who played a crucial role in defending our nation during one of its most tumultuous periods - a testament to their unwavering commitment to duty and honor.
