First Bank Of The United States

Engraving by Fenner Sears & Co. shows pedestrians on the street outside the First Bank of the United States which was Alexander Hamiltons brainchild and forerunner of our current Federal Reserve Bank System, Walnut Street, Philadelphia, 1831. The building was completed in 1795 but in 1811 the Congress allowed the banks charter to lapse. Stephen Girard bought the building, designed Blodgett and Windrim and believed to be the first Greek Revival bank in the country, to house his own banking interests. It is now a museum. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Philadelphia in 1831. The engraving by Fenner Sears & Co. beautifully captures pedestrians going about their daily lives outside the historic First Bank of the United States, a significant architectural landmark that holds great historical importance. Designed by Blodgett and Windrim, this Greek Revival bank building was originally Alexander Hamilton's brainchild and served as a forerunner to our current Federal Reserve Bank System. Completed in 1795, it became an emblem of commerce and finance during its time. However, due to changes in legislation, Congress allowed the bank's charter to lapse in 1811. It was then purchased by Stephen Girard, who transformed it into his own banking institution. This move made it one of the first Greek Revival banks in America. Today, this magnificent structure stands as a museum where visitors can explore its rich history and learn about its role in shaping American economics. The print showcases a medium group of people walking along Walnut Street, creating a vivid snapshot of life during that era. With its neo-classical architecture and grand portico cart entrance, this image is not only visually striking but also serves as a reminder of how far our nation has come since those early days when financial systems were still being established.
