Engraving by Fenner Sears & Co. shows pedestrians on the street outside the First Bank of the United States which was Alexander Hamiltons brainchild and forerunner of our current Federal Reserve Bank System, Walnut Street, Philadelphia, 1831. The building was completed in 1795 but in 1811 the Congress allowed the banks charter to lapse. Stephen Girard bought the building, designed Blodgett and Windrim and believed to be the first Greek Revival bank in the country, to house his own banking interests. It is now a museum.
