EDITORS COMMENTS
Arcady," the George Owen Knapp house, located at Sycamore Canyon Road in Montecito, California, is a stunning example of Italianate mission style architecture captured in this beautiful 1917 photograph by renowned American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston. The house was originally designed by Ralph Radcliffe-Whitehead and built by Christopher Tornoe in 1911 for George Owen Knapp. Later, it was expanded by E. Russell Ray in the same year. The lower garden of the estate was designed by Francis Townsend Underhill in 1914, while the upper garden was the collaborative work of Carlton Monroe Winslow and Charles Gibbs Adams around 1913. The estate's landscape was meticulously maintained by Charles R. Waugh from 1912 to 1928, with John Scott serving as the head gardener. The photograph showcases the house's grandeur, with its red-tiled roof, arched windows, and intricate stonework. The steps leading up to the entrance are adorned with a mythical sphinx, adding an air of mystery and enchantment to the property. The lush greenery and vibrant flowers in the gardens further enhance the beauty of the estate. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a pioneering American photographer and documentarian of historic houses and gardens, captured this hand-colored lantern slide image, which is now part of the Library of Congress's collection. The photograph transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the elegance and charm of the early 20th-century Montecito estate.
