Government House, Auckland, New Zealand, 1864. Creator: Unknown
Government House, Auckland, New Zealand, 1864....we present a View of the Government House at Auckland, the capital of the colony, where Sir George Grey, the present Governor, usually resides, and where the General Legislative Assembly, composed of the elect representatives of the several Provinces of Auckland, Wellington, New Plymouth, Nelson, Canterbury, Marlborough, Otago, and Southland, is accustomed to meet. There is, however, an increasing agitation for the removal of the seat of government to Wellington or some other place with a more central situation than that of Auckland. The building represented in our Engraving is one which has been erected, within the last three or four years, to replace the original Government House, which was destroyed by fire. It is surrounded by a public pleasure-garden'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the grandeur of Government House in Auckland, New Zealand, circa 1864. The residence of Sir George Grey, the Governor at that time, this impressive building also served as the meeting place for the General Legislative Assembly. Surrounded by a public pleasure garden, this colonial-era mansion was a symbol of British power and influence in the region.
The image provides a glimpse into Auckland's role as the capital of the colony, where representatives from various provinces gathered to make important decisions. However, even then there were discussions about relocating the seat of government to a more central location like Wellington.
Despite its relatively recent construction to replace an earlier structure destroyed by fire, Government House exudes elegance and sophistication in this engraving from "Illustrated London News". The intricate details captured in this print showcase not only architectural beauty but also historical significance.
As we admire this piece of history frozen in time, we are reminded of New Zealand's complex colonial past and its ties to the British Empire. This print serves as a window into a bygone era when Government House stood as a symbol of authority and governance in Auckland.
