EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "Saint Columba and the White Horse, 1912" transports us back to a bygone era of British literature and religious devotion. The print, featured in W. M. Letts' book "The Mighty Army" beautifully illustrates an interaction between Saint Columba and a majestic white horse. Set against an outdoor backdrop, this scene captures the essence of spirituality intertwined with nature. Standing tall beside the horse is a man dressed as a monk, representing Saint Columba himself. His presence exudes tranquility and reverence as he engages with this magnificent creature. The artist Stephen Reid masterfully brings this moment to life through intricate details that showcase his talent for capturing movement and emotion. The contrasting tones of black ink on white paper emphasize the purity symbolized by both Saint Columba's robe and the noble steed. Dating back to the 6th century but depicted here in early 20th-century style, this image bridges centuries while highlighting Britain's rich cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of how art can transcend time, allowing us to connect with historical figures like Saint Columba on a deeply personal level. As we gaze upon this lithograph from "The Mighty Army" we are transported into an ethereal realm where faith intertwines with nature—a testament to human spirituality throughout history.
