The Start, 1886. Artist: Joseph Swain

The Start, 1886. On the left at the starting line is the Grand Old Man of politics, the Liberal Prime Minister, William Gladstone. On the right is Lord Salisbury, the Leader in the Lords of the Conservatives and the former Prime Minister. Gladstones government had resigned after he had been defeated on the second reading of his Irish Home Rule Bill, and the country was set for a General Election. Salisbury had just made a speech in which he had proposed an alternative policy. His view that parliament should enable the British government to rule Ireland and manage Irish affairs. He proposed that this rule should pertain for twenty years, after which time Ireland would be sincerely grateful for any gift in the way of local government that Britain might care to bestow upon her. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 3, 1886

The Start, 1886

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a significant political event in the late 19th century. In this artwork by Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, we witness the commencement of a race between two prominent figures in British politics. On the left stands William Gladstone, known as the Grand Old Man of politics and former Liberal Prime Minister. Opposite him on the right is Lord Salisbury, Leader in the Lords of the Conservatives and also a former Prime Minister. The context behind this image is crucial to understanding its significance. Gladstone's government had recently resigned after being defeated on his Irish Home Rule Bill's second reading, leading to an upcoming General Election. Meanwhile, Salisbury had just proposed an alternative policy suggesting that Britain should rule Ireland for twenty years before granting any form of local government. This cartoon-like engraving serves as both satire and caricature while highlighting key elements such as flags representing each party: Union Jack for conservatives and liberal banners for Gladstone's side. The image symbolizes defeat, with both men portrayed as aged politicians ready to embark on this intense race towards power. "The Start, 1886" not only showcases political rivalry but also reflects broader themes like national identity and governance during that era. It remains an important historical artifact capturing a pivotal moment in British history where ideas clashed amidst fervent debates surrounding Ireland's future within Britain's rule.
