A 2000 dinner party at the Savoy, 1910

The winter garden of the Savoy Hotel converted into a realistic representation of the North Pole when Mr George A. Kessler, the New York millionaire (seen on the right, standing) gave a banquet to rival his much-talked-of gondola dinner of four years previously (see picture numbers 11017490 and 10469569). The cost of the banquet was stated to be over 2000 or nearly 60 a head. Picture shows guests seated amid the icebergs whereas the poor waiters were dressed as eskimos! Date: 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph from 1910, the winter garden of the prestigious Savoy Hotel in London has been transformed into a magical and theatrical representation of the North Pole for a grand banquet hosted by American millionaire, Mr. George A. Kessler. The Savoy, known for its opulence and innovative themed events, had previously wowed guests with a gondola dinner four years prior (as depicted in picture numbers 11017490 and 10469569). This time, Kessler outdid himself, promising a dining experience unlike any other. The cost of the banquet was reportedly over £2,000, equating to nearly £60 per head. As guests took their seats amidst the towering icebergs, they were transported to the icy landscapes of the Arctic. The poor waiters, however, were tasked with the less glamorous role of dressing up as eskimos to serve the diners. The atmosphere was electric, with the North Pole theme extending to every detail. The tables were adorned with ice-blue linens, and the centerpieces featured miniature polar scenes. The guests, dressed in their finest evening attire, seemed to relish the opportunity to escape the mundane and immerse themselves in this fantastical world. The Savoy Hotel, under the leadership of its innovative management, continued to set the standard for themed events during the Edwardian era. This North Pole banquet, with its theatrical flair and attention to detail, was yet another testament to the hotel's commitment to providing unforgettable experiences for its esteemed clientele.
