EDITORS COMMENTS
This caricature depicts the eccentric and flamboyant figure of Frederick Gustavus Burnaby, a traveller and British army officer, during his unsuccessful Tory candidacy for Birmingham in the 1880 General Election. Burnaby, with his distinctive moustache and top hat, is shown in two contrasting scenes. In the first, he is seen sitting at a table, surrounded by men, enjoying a glass of wine and a plate of cockles, seemingly in a state of relaxation and contentment. In the second scene, Burnaby is shown riding a cork horse, with a determined expression on his face and a bottle of pills in hand, symbolizing his adventurous and unconventional spirit. Burnaby, a Victorian-era man of many talents, was known for his travels in the Middle East and Central Asia, where he wrote popular travelogues and gained a reputation as an accomplished horseman and a daring explorer. His flamboyant personality and eccentricities made him a popular figure in society, and he was often the subject of caricatures and satirical illustrations. Despite his lack of success in politics, Burnaby's adventurous spirit and charisma continued to captivate the public. This caricature, by the skilled hand of Terry Parker, perfectly captures the essence of Burnaby's eccentric personality and the contrasting aspects of his life - the relaxed, enjoyable moments and the daring, adventurous ones. A true Victorian original, Burnaby remains an intriguing figure in history, and this caricature is a testament to his enduring legacy.
