EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph depicts a group of Chamorro natives from Agagna, the ancient name for Hagatna, the capital city of Guam. The image, taken from Friedrich Wilhelm Goedsche's Complete Gallery of Peoples in True Pictures, published in Meissen around 1835-1840, offers a fascinating glimpse into the daily life of this Pacific Island community. At the center of the scene, a group of Chamorro men and women are engaged in the traditional process of distilling alcohol. The men, dressed in loincloths and adorned with shell necklaces and headbands, expertly tend to the distillation apparatus. They carefully pour the fermented coconut sap into the still, while another man stokes the fire beneath it. The women, clad in colorful skirts and blouses, prepare the raw materials and assist in the process. Surrounding the distillation scene, other Chamorro natives are depicted in various stages of their daily routine. Some are shown weaving mats or basketry, while others are engaged in farming or fishing activities. In the background, a group of dancers perform a lively traditional dance, their vibrant costumes and animated movements adding to the lively atmosphere of the scene. This ethnographic image provides a valuable record of Chamorro customs and traditions, offering insights into their history, culture, and way of life. The intricate details of the handcolored lithograph, from the textures of the clothing to the expressions on the faces of the subjects, bring the scene to life and transport us back in time to a fascinating and distant world.
