Operated by the Metropolitan Asylums Board, the hospital opened in 1903, marking the end of an era for the three hospital ships moored nearby on the River Thames. The ships, which had provided essential medical care since the late 19th century, were replaced by this permanent structure. The Stores Block, with its high ceilings and extensive shelving, served as the central hub for the distribution and management of medical supplies and provisions within the hospital.
