EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the bustling activity at Lushunkou Harbour in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China, circa 1905. Lushunkou, also known as Port Arthur and Ryojun, is a historic district and former Russian concession located on the Liaodong Peninsula. The harbour was a significant strategic and economic hub during the late Qing Dynasty and early 20th century, when Russia, Japan, and China vied for control of the region. In this image, we see a scene of daily life at the quay side. Russian sailors and local fishermen work together, loading and unloading cargo from the ships. The Russian influence is evident in the presence of the Russian warships anchored in the harbour, as well as the tracks leading to the railway station in the background, which connected Port Arthur to the Trans-Siberian Railway. The harbour was a vital source of income for the local fishing community, as seen in the small boats docked at the quay. The fishermen would sell their catch to the merchants and traders, who would then transport the goods to markets in China and beyond. The bustling activity at the harbour also attracted a diverse population of merchants, traders, and settlers from various parts of the world, contributing to the rich cultural tapestry of the region. Despite the passage of time, this photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when Lushunkou Harbour was a thriving hub of international trade and cultural exchange. Today, Lushunkou is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who come to explore its historic sites, beautiful beaches, and vibrant cultural heritage.
