This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print showcases two fascinating nocturnal birds native to Australia: the Australian Owlet Nightjar (Aegotheles cristatus) and the Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides), or the Banded Goatsucker (Caprimulgus vittatus). Both birds are masterfully depicted in this engraving from John Latham's seminal work, A General History of Birds, published in Winchester in 1823. The Australian Owlet Nightjar, also known as the Rufous Owlet-nightjar, is a small, cryptically colored bird with a round face and large, forward-facing eyes. Its plumage is a mix of rufous-brown and black, with white spots on its wings. This bird is well-camouflaged against the bark of trees, making it an excellent hunter of insects and other small creatures in the dark. The Tawny Frogmouth, or the Banded Goatsucker, is a larger, more robust bird with a distinctive, flat-topped head and a wide, gaping beak.
