EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print showcases two fascinating nocturnal birds native to Australia: the Australian Owlet Nightjar (Aegotheles cristatus) and the Tawny Frogmouth (Podargus strigoides), or the Banded Goatsucker (Caprimulgus vittatus). Both birds are masterfully depicted in this engraving from John Latham's seminal work, A General History of Birds, published in Winchester in 1823. The Australian Owlet Nightjar, also known as the Rufous Owlet-nightjar, is a small, cryptically colored bird with a round face and large, forward-facing eyes. Its plumage is a mix of rufous-brown and black, with white spots on its wings. This bird is well-camouflaged against the bark of trees, making it an excellent hunter of insects and other small creatures in the dark. The Tawny Frogmouth, or the Banded Goatsucker, is a larger, more robust bird with a distinctive, flat-topped head and a wide, gaping beak. Its plumage is mostly grayish-brown with black and white bands on its wings and tail. This bird is named for its ability to mimic the croaking sounds of frogs to lure prey, but it also feeds on insects, reptiles, and small mammals. John Latham, a renowned ornithologist, drew and engraved these birds from life, capturing their unique features and intricate details with remarkable accuracy. His work remains an essential contribution to the field of ornithology, providing a record of the natural history of these fascinating Australian birds.
