This historic photograph captures the determined gaze and focused expression of Lieutenant Edward H. "Butch" O'Hare, a decorated US Navy fighter pilot during World War II. O'Hare, who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic actions, is shown in flight gear and sitting in the cockpit of his Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter plane. The image exudes a sense of intensity and concentration as O'Hare prepares for a mission. O'Hare, who was born in Chicago in 1914, joined the Navy in 1932 and became a naval aviator in 1935. On February 2, 1943, O'Hare led a daring nighttime attack on a Japanese fleet, destroying several enemy planes and damaging a cruiser. For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, making him the first naval aviator to receive the honor during World War II.
