This photograph takes us back in time to the picturesque village of Polperro, Cornwall, in the year 1861. The image showcases the bustling activity along the harbour walls from a landward perspective. A group of men can be seen standing on the inner wall, their figures silhouetted against the vast expanse of sea and sky. The significance of this moment is heightened by knowing that construction for the Prince of Wales Pier was about to commence. Just days after this photo was taken, on September 5th, 1861, the foundation stone for this iconic landmark would be laid. It's fascinating to imagine how these very walls captured in this print would soon witness further transformation with its completion on January 1st, 1862. Preserved through time and now presented as a photographic print from Thomas Q. Couch's manuscript "The History of Polperro" (1878), which built upon Jonathan Couch's earlier work published in 1871, we owe thanks to photographer Lewis Harding for capturing this remarkable scene.
