Alan Turing (1912-54), British mathematician. Turing was educated at Cambridge and Princeton. In 1937 he described a theoretical computer (a Turing machine) in rigorous mathematical terms, formalising the previously vague concept of computability. During the Second World War he worked as a code breaker at Bletchley Park, Britains codebreaking centre. In 1939-40 Turing and Cambridge mathematician, Gordon Welchman, designed the British Bombe, which could break any Enigma-enciphered message. In later years he worked on Artificial Intelligence, devising the Turing test to decide whether a computer can be thought of as truly intelligent. Turing committed suicide when prosecuted for his homosexuality, at that time a criminal offence

This print captures the brilliance and tragic fate of Alan Turing, a remarkable British mathematician. Born in 1912, Turing's intellect knew no bounds as he pursued his education at prestigious institutions like Cambridge and Princeton. In 1937, he revolutionized the world of computing by introducing the concept of a theoretical computer known as the Turing machine. This groundbreaking work formalized the abstract notion of computability into rigorous mathematical terms. During World War II, Turing played a pivotal role in cracking codes at Bletchley Park, Britain's codebreaking center. Alongside fellow mathematician Gordon Welchman, he designed the British Bombe - an ingenious device capable of deciphering any Enigma-enciphered message used by German forces. Turing's genius extended beyond cryptography and wartime efforts. He delved into Artificial Intelligence and devised what is now famously known as the "Turing test". This test aimed to determine whether a computer could exhibit true intelligence comparable to human cognition. Tragically, despite his immense contributions to science and technology, Turing fell victim to societal prejudice due to his homosexuality. Prosecuted for this then-criminal offense in 1954, he chose to end his own life.
